Day 12, Great Ocean Road
I rocked up to the 12 Apostles around noon, and it was super cloudy. Snapped a few shots and then headed over to Gibson Steps, where you can hit the beach. I hoofed it from the 12 Apostles parking lot, bit of a walk. (You can park at Gibson Steps, but spots are seriously limited). More stairs, gotta love 'em! Then, lo and behold, I find out this beach isn't the spot to see the 12 Apostles. Seriously? I trek all the way down here just to find that out. Major bummer. Just so you know, if you head down to Gibson Steps, don't expect to see the 12 Apostles. You'll just see some big ol' rocks (though, let's be real, the 12 Apostles are rocks too). Well, at least I was smart enough to check it out before sunset shoot.
Day 13, Great Ocean Road
I'm not big on trusting weather forecasts, but they were calling for an even worse day than yesterday. Still, I was keeping my fingers crossed for a bit of blue sky. Surprisingly, when morning rolled around, there was a glimmer of hope in the light, so I held out for some blue sky once the sun peeked over the horizon.
Around 10 am, I hopped in the car and made my way to the 12 Apostles. And what do you know? There was just a hint of blue sky! Snapped a few shots and then kept driving to check out more of the magnificent rocks along the Great Ocean Road. Another sunset was on the agenda for another epic shot.
So, which shot's your favorite?
Quick heads up for anyone planning a trip like mine: the accommodation along this route, except for in the cities, didn't have reliable wifi. In fact, some spots didn't have wifi in the rooms at all, so keep that in mind.
Also, let me give you a friendly reminder about tech. I've mentioned it before, but it's worth repeating. I had my trusty USB C plug with me for this Victoria trip. Didn't think I'd need it, but lo and behold, when I hit the road in my Hybrid Toyota Corolla, I discovered there was only a USB C charging spot. No regular USB port in sight. So, if you're relying on your phone for GPS or tunes while you're cruising, make sure you pack a USB C charger cable, just in case.
Oh, and another thing— No flying allowed in these parts along the Great Ocean Road.
Photographers, listen up! If you're curious about how I managed to store all those epic shots from my trip, check out my blog for the lowdown.
And let's talk about the name, "Great Ocean Road." Who came up with that? Because let me tell you, most of the time, you're not even catching a glimpse of the ocean as you drive. It's more like a scenic tour through dense forests. So, if you're after stunning coastal drives, I'd suggest hitting up Oahu and cruising along the east coast, what I like to call Blue Hawaii. Now, that's some ocean scenery worth driving for haha!
