Day 12 Great Ocean Road, Victoria
I arrived in Melbourne last night and found the first hotel that had a bathtub —score! Driving in a big, unfamiliar city was a bit nerve-wracking, but I made it here safely.
The Great Ocean Road has been on my bucket list since I first saw a picture of the "12 Apostles" back when I was living in Cairns in 2017. Finally, I made it!
On my first day, I stopped by Apollo Bay to check out a couple of waterfalls. The hike to get to them was only a mile or two, but man, it was all stairs! Going down was fine, but I knew I'd have to climb back up. I visited Beauchamp Falls (about 130 steps) and Hopetoun Falls (about 200 steps). Which one was better? Hard to say. Both trails were well-marked, and you get to see the waterfall from a metal platform, which felt kind of odd.
The waterfalls were nice, but not exactly mind-blowing. If you've got little ones and you're looking for an enjoyable hike, I'd suggest trying another trail.
At Apollo Bay, I finally found something worth talking about: food! I ended up at "George's Restaurant." Let me tell you, the staff's attitude was just terrible—like, really terrible. I almost walked out before I even ordered. But with limited options in a small town like this, and some places not even open, I had to give it a shot. I kept telling myself, "If you leave, you might not find anything else to eat tonight. You skipped breakfast and lunch today, you can't miss out on dinner!" Haha! But you know what? Despite the attitude, the fish burger was amazing. I absolutely loved it.
There wasn't much else to write home about in Apollo Bay. Oh, except for feeling sorry for the poor souls attempting surf lessons on the beach. I mean, seriously, who wants to learn to surf in this cold weather with dark waters? They should head over to Hawaii for that! lol.
