Avoid Direct Sunlight

While it is tempting to display your metal print in a well-lit area of your home to showcase its colors and details, extended exposure to direct sunlight can cause fading over time. Even with a UV-resistant coating, the harmful effects of sunlight cannot be completely prevented. Therefore, it is advisable to choose a location where your print won't be exposed to direct sunlight for prolonged periods.

How to clean metal prints

Cleaning metal prints is a relatively simple task that mainly involves dusting. However, there are occasions when fingerprints or smudges require more thorough cleaning. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to properly clean your metal prints:

  1. Dusting:

    • To remove dust, use a feather duster and gently run it along the top edge of the metal print.

    • Make nice strokes down from the top to ensure all dust is removed.

  2. Cleaning for Fingerprints or Smudges:

    • To clean fingerprints or smudges, you will need a streak-free cleaning solution and a non-abrasive cloth.

    • Avoid using paper towels; instead, opt for a microfiber cleaning cloth.

    • Start by wiping from the middle towards the edge of the print to ensure a streak-free result.

    • This will effectively remove any fingerprints or smudges, leaving your metal print clean and pristine.

Now let's take a closer look at each component of cleaning a metal print:

Cleaning Solutions

Selecting the right cleaning solution is crucial to avoid any damage to the color or the metal itself. Here are some options:

  • Water: Water is a quick and easy solution for removing surface dirt, but it may leave streaks or smudges.

  • Glass cleaner: Any streak-free glass cleaner works well for cleaning surface dirt and fingerprints.

  • Isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol: A small amount of isopropyl alcohol can be used with a non-abrasive cloth to clean fingerprints off your metal print. It dries streak-free and leaves your print looking shiny and new.

  • Avoid using bleach or heavy-duty cleaning solutions as they can damage the surface of your print.

We recommend using Windex as it effectively removes streaks and fingerprints without any hassle.

Cleaning Cloth

Choosing the right cloth is essential to prevent smudging or leaving behind dirt particles. Microfiber and lint-free cloths are excellent options as they are specifically designed not to leave particles behind. These cloths can be easily found on Amazon or at your local supermarket. Ensure there are no small rocks or other materials that could scratch the surface of the print while cleaning.

Avoid using hand towels, paper towels, or tissues, as they can leave unwanted streaks and lint particles. While these common household materials might work in most cases, they may require extra wiping to remove any annoying lint particles. Steel wool and other abrasive cleaning tools should never be used on metal prints as they can permanently damage the surface.

Cleaning Technique

We recommend cleaning your print after hanging or displaying it to remove any fingerprints or smudges that may have occurred during the hanging process. By following these steps, your displayed print will always be perfectly clean:

  1. Lightly dip the non-abrasive cloth into the cleaning solution of your choice (water, isopropyl alcohol, or glass cleaner). Alternatively, you can use a spray bottle to lightly spray the metal print with the solution. Be cautious not to apply too much cleaning solution, as it may cause streaks.

  2. Carefully use the cloth to remove dirt or fingerprints by cleaning outward from the center of the print. This method helps push any hard-to-remove dirt towards the edge, making it easier to remove.

  3. If your print is hanging on a wall, ensure it remains firmly attached while cleaning.

  4. If possible, clean the print before hanging or displaying it to avoid fingerprints on the edges. When moving or hanging the print, handle it with non-abrasive cloths to maintain its pristine condition. In case any smudges occur during handling, you can always take the print down, clean it, and re-hang it.

To ensure the longevity and vibrancy of your canvas prints, it is crucial to follow proper care guidelines. This guide will provide you with essential tips to maintain the quality of your artwork.

1. Avoid Direct Sunlight

While it is tempting to display your canvas print in a well-lit area of your home to showcase its colors and details, extended exposure to direct sunlight can cause fading over time. Even with a UV-resistant coating, the harmful effects of sunlight cannot be completely prevented. Therefore, it is advisable to choose a location where your print won't be exposed to direct sunlight for prolonged periods.

2. Maintain Cool and Dry Conditions

Temperature and humidity can greatly affect the lifespan of your canvas print. Heat and moisture can cause the canvas to stretch or warp. Avoid hanging your canvas in areas prone to high humidity, such as bathrooms and unfinished basements. Furthermore, keep it away from places like the kitchen, where cooking can generate smoke and moisture.

3. Gently Dust, Do Not Rub

Like any other item in your home, canvas prints can accumulate dust and cobwebs over time. When it's time to clean, use a feather duster to gently remove the surface debris. Avoid rubbing the print with your fingers or nails, as this can scratch the material. If necessary, use a slightly damp microfiber cloth to wipe the print in circular motions, ensuring it is not too wet to prevent water damage.

4. Avoid Chemical Cleaners

If stubborn dirt or stains cannot be removed with a damp cloth, it is crucial to avoid using chemical-based cleaners. These solutions may damage the UV coating or cause the ink to strip away. Instead, seek professional cleaning services offered by local art stores or recommended cleaning specialists.

5. Store with Acid-Free Paper

When storing your canvas prints, whether for rotation, relocation, or long-term preservation, it is essential to wrap them in acid-free paper or another acid-free material. Acid-free paper acts as a protective layer against scratches and prevents yellowing over time. Additionally, store your prints in a cool and dry environment to prevent stretching or loosening due to fluctuations in temperature and moisture.

By following these guidelines, you can ensure that your canvas prints remain vibrant and captivating for years to come. With proper care, your artwork can be cherished and enjoyed for a lifetime.

  • Oil you should use: food-grade mineral oil, cutting board oil/conditioner or cutting board wax

  • Use the dishwasher as the heat can warp the wood.

  • Use abrasive scrubbers like steel wool as they can ruin the beautiful finish. Instead, use plastic scrapers, gentle dish soap, and hot water for stubborn food bits.

  • Soak your board in water for a longer period of time, as it can cause warping. It is fine to rinse and wash the board.

  • Use olive or vegetable oils as they can become rancid over time and give the board an unpleasant smell that may affect the food.

  • Store the board in a closed space. Air flow is important to keep the board dry and prevent moisture buildup that can cause warping and breakage. Instead, consider displaying the board as kitchen decor on the counter or hang it on the wall. Another option is to store it in a well-ventilated pantry if you prefer to keep it out of sight.
